15th Annual Mystic Irish Parade
It’s been a white winter all over New England, but, for the first spring weekend, green is on its way – and not just on the trees. March 25, it’s the Mystic Irish Parade.
If you haven’t been to Mystic before, this might be the perfect weekend to strike up an acquaintance. The parade winds its way from Mystic Seaport’s South Parking lot through the center of town, crosses the historic Bascule Bridge, and ends up at the parking lot of the Mystic Arts Center. The three-hour long celebration features bands, floats, dignitaries, national acts and local groups, and steps off promptly at 1:00 PM.
If you’re driving, early arrival is recommended. If you do arrive early, you might want to check out Mystic Seaport – which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March Sundays – and is convenient to where the parade will muster. (Parking note: Best bet may be to park where the parade ends -- Mystic Arts Center parking lot, 9 Water Street. Lots of additional smaller parking lots can be found along the parade route or on the many side streets along the route. Parking is also plentiful in the Olde Mystic Village parking lot, although it is a mile walk from there to the beginning of the parade route.)
If you want to participate the weekend before, the Mystic Irish 5K Road Race is being run on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 10 AM, starting and ending in downtown Mystic, and racing along scenic River Road on the banks of the Mystic River. Green gear is highly encouraged and winners get a prize spot in Sunday’s parade. Register online at http://www.groton-ct.gov/depts/parksrec/mysticirish5k.asp -- $25 until March 13. (You can also register the day of the race for $30.) Best parking is at Mystic Arts Center – small additional charge applies.
