Gallery Night Providence
Providence has an extremely vibrant art scene, and – for almost twenty years now – a fun way to sample it, all in one exciting evening. Every third Thursday of the month, from March to November, galleries across Providence open their doors. This free event, which celebrates art ranging from contemporary multi-media installations to one-of-a-kind functional artworks, is called Gallery Night Providence
Starting with nine determined galleries in 1996, Gallery Night Providence has grown to include 24 galleries (as of 2014), with art buses travelling the neighborhoods of Providence letting people on and off at galleries, museums and historic sites. While you can drive or stroll on your own (pick up a free map at One Regency Plaza), many people enjoy the guided artbus tours, which leave from One Regency Plaza every twenty minutes from 5:30 to 7 pm. Each bus tour has its own theme, and visits approximately 4 galleries in 2 hours, with several tours usually led by local art celebrities. There are also Collectors’ Tours, where unpretentious everyday collectors share stories and collecting advice. Gallery night is this Thursday, March 15, from 5-9pm.
All of this is absolutely free, and with so many ever-changing galleries and museums to visit, many locals make this a monthly event. Regardless of which option you choose, you’re guaranteed to have fun as you enjoy wine and cheese, listen to music and experience the wonderful art Providence has to offer.
