Newport Flower Show
It’s hard to get more Newport-y than a celebration of flowers at Newport’s Rosecliff mansion -- the birthplace of the American Beauty Rose, which was created by historian George Bancroft when he summered there in the late 19th century. So if glam festivities are your style, you might want to attend The Newport Flower Show and it’s festive Opening Night Party, which kicks off the Newport summer season.
This year’s show runs from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23 with a theme of Audubon Artistic Adventures, honoring the great ornithologist and painter. $20 gets you into the show for a one-day admission on any of the three days (10:30 am-5 pm Friday; 9-5 on both Saturday and Sunday), but that’s just the start. For example, Friday events include a luncheon and lecture from internationally-known lifestyle expert India Hicks (the granddaughter of The Earl Mountbatten of Burma) --$100 for the luncheon and lecture, $50 for lecture only – and an afternoon high tea ($65). Friday evening, the Opening Night Party is a cocktail buffet where you get a first look at the horticultural extravaganza, get first crack at the Oceanside Boutiques and Gardeners Marketplace, and mingle with society on the mansion’s spectacular outdoor grounds. Tickets are $200 each ($175 prior to June 7) for non-members with food stations, entertainment and surprises included;.party goes from 6-9 pm. There are similar options each day, with some events included in the entry fee, some (like the Saturday evening film viewing) for a modest addition, and some (like the Sunday Champagne Brunch) running a bit more. See the website for complete details.
By the way, even if you’re not a dedicated gardening fan, Rosecliff itself (one of Newport’s Gilded Age mansions, modeled by architect Stanford White after Marie Antoinette’s Grand Trianon mansion in Versailles) is well worth a visit.
