Tour the Lizzie Borden House

With all the manufactured gore that Halloween brings with it, we thought it might be an idea to remind you that you can see the real thing: The Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, MA, where Lizzie Borden famously gave her mother 40 whacks … with an axe.

Lizzie Borden’s Home is now a bed and breakfast where (if you book a month or two ahead) you can reserve any of 8 bedrooms (including the Morse Room where Lizzie’s mother’s body was found), an entire floor, or the entire house. On short notice, however, you might want to start with the 50-minute tours, which go off every hour on the hour from 10 AM to 3 PM every day of the year except Christmas and New Year’s Day. It won’t surprise you that there are a lot of tour buses, especially in October, so you might want to avoid the time slots they’re occupying (most are between 10 and noon on the October 17-20 weekend; check website for an up-to-date list).

Rates for tours are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors and college students with ID, and $17 for children ages 7-15. Children 6 and under are free. (Guests staying at the bed and breakfast receive a complimentary tour with their stay.) By the way, if you’re really into ghosts – Maplecroft, the “Mansion on the Hill” that Lizbeth bought after her acquittal, has been restored to its original grandeur – and is said to be haunted. You can stay over (no refunds when things go bump in the night!) or periodically go ghost-hunting with Sue Vickery and Debra Vickers (of Kindred Spirits).    Visit the website for more info or call for reservations (508-675-7333.)
