A Weekend in East Haddam
If you want the perfect getaway weekend, combining top-notch musical theatre and a luxurious hotel, you may think your only choice is New York City. Well, here’s another thought: out-of-the-way East Haddam, Connecticut.
East Haddam is home to the famous Goodspeed Opera House, home of Goodspeed Musicals, which has been among the best regional theaters in the country since the early 60s. (It has produced over 250 musicals, and was the “birthplace” of such hits as Annie and Man of La Mancha).Just as rewarding as the quality of the performances is the unique venue – a theater built into the top two stories of a what appears to be a large Victorian building. (It was constructed in 1877 by a rich local merchant and banker, and always staged plays, not operas.) Its location is equally gorgeous -- right on the Connecticut River.
If you want to experience Goodspeed, Billy Elliot, the popular Broadway show about a boy with coal-mining roots but a passion for dance that features Elton John’s music, is on tap through November 24 There a two shows (afternoon and evening) Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; plus performances Friday evening and a Sunday matinee. Tickets are $35 to $79.
By the way, if you’re looking for a discovery of the romantic kind, you can’t do much better than The Boardman House Inn, which a host of reviewers (Yankee Magazine among them) rate as among Connecticut’s best B&Bs. It’s located in a beautifully-appointed 1860 mansion that’s an exquisite example of Second Empire architecture, and is a short stroll from both the Goodspeed and a bunch of nice little restaurants.
