Bumper Cars on Ice

Remember the fun you used to have at amusement parks, bashing your friends with those little metal bumper cars? Well, now you can enjoy the same kind of fun – only sitting in giant inner tubes on the ice of the outdoor skating rink in downtown Providence.

Pretty much anyone can participate in the action, though you have to be at least 6 years old and 42 inches tall to get your own car (3-5 year olds can ride with a parent, or anyone else 16 and over.) You make a reservation on line, show up 20 minutes ahead of time, and get oriented and sign a waiver prior to getting in the cars. Cars move forward, backward, sideways and spin 360 degrees, just like you remember, but the ride lasts a full 15 minutes!

Bumper car sessions come in two flavors, shared ice – where bumper cars run on just a third of the ice surface (4-8 pm on weekdays, 10am-2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays) – and full ice sessions, which take place at off peak times (10-11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays; 9-10 am on Saturdays and Sundays). Tickets are $12 for shared ice; $15 for full ice. The Alex & Ani rink is downtown, so our recommendation is to do dinner before or after: for romantic places to eat, you might want to look at the Dorrance or Gracie’s, both a reasonably short stroll; for staying over, the Biltmore and Omni hotels are just steps away.
