Mardi Gras Cocktail Fundraiser
Mardi Gras is February 25th this year, and if you don’t have plans to celebrate in New Orleans itself, there are a couple fun Mardi Gras-inspired events the weekend prior that occur in and around Providence.
The first is a cocktail fundraiser at the Ballroom at the Providence G in downtown Providence. The Providence G is short for the Providence Gas Company, and the Ballroom (originally the lobby of the opulent 1920 building) retains most of the original architectural details, crystal chandeliers and marble floors. The evening consists of hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and plenty of dancing with a DJ; you can also purchase raffle tickets to support the Nonviolence Institute, which is sponsoring the event. Tickets are $65, and can be purchased online. Complimentary valet parking is available.
If you can’t make the fun on the 21st (or if you just want a second night of partying,) the annual Mardi Gras at St. Ann’s takes place the evening of Saturday the 22nd, at St. Ann Arts and Cultural Center in Woonsocket, RI (84 Cumberland Street.) Doors open at 5, and a Cajun buffet featuring New Orleans fare is served from 6-8 pm. Live music is by the Squeezebox Stompers; tickets are $30 (slightly more with service fee) online, or by calling 401 762 9072. If you can, sneak a peek at the former Roman Catholic church in which the center is housed, which is covered with frescos – so many, and of such quality, that St Ann’s was dubbed “The Sistine Chapel of America” by Yankee Magazine.
