Newport Winter Festival

There are plenty of reasons to visit Newport any time of the year, but between February 14 and 23, they’re adding about 150 more. It’s the Newport Winter Festival, touted as “New England’s Largest Winter Extravaganza.”

The festival combines food, festivities, music and fun, and appeals to just about everyone. To take Saturday as an example, you can attend the 25th Annual Chili Cook Off (11am-3:30 pm at Gurney’s Newport Resort) where area restaurants and caterers compete and you act as a judge ($12 for adults, $5 kids); join illusionist David Garrity for a family friendly magic/comedy show called Mysterious Deceptions that includes such things as witnessing a table mysteriously float out into the audience (6:30 pm at Newport Marriott; $8 in advance, $10 at the door); and end the day with Changes in Latitude, a Jimmy Buffett Tribute band (8:30 at Gurneys, $17 general admission, $45 for VIP).

If you’re planning to take in several events, or just stay in Newport long enough for a meal or two, you should buy a festival bracelet. They’re $10, and provide free admission to some events and discounts on the others, as well as saving you money at stores, museums and restaurants throughout the area. Purchase them online before you go.
