Sleigh Rides in CT
Need a Valentine’s do-over? Provided it’s snowy enough – and late February in rural Connecticut rarely disappoints – may we suggest a romantic sleigh ride?
Wood Acre Farms has 25 acres of wooded trails, and with the help of two draft horses, they run rides over the hills of central Connecticut. If it’s a beautiful day following a good snow, it’s an unforgettable chance to snuggle under a thick blanket, or just to sit back and enjoy nature – sometimes even including deer sightings. (If the snow isn’t sufficient on the day you arrange, you’ll receive a Country Carriage Ride or Wagon Ride instead.) All rides are private and by reservation only; to reserve your date, a non-refundable deposit is required: call 860 583-8670.
Another option is Allegra Farm near East Haddam (860 680 5149; www.allegrafarm.com). It’s the largest authentic livery stable in Connecticut, and is home to the Horse Drawn Carriage and Sleigh Museum of New England, as well as offering rides by appointment only using vintage equipment. (It’s very Courier and Ives, and they’ll even let you bring your own refreshments!) Many of the carriages and sleighs you could opt to ride on have had supporting roles in movies you know -- Amistad and Kate & Leopold, to name a few. John Allegra, who owns the stable, is pleasantly accommodating. Again, call to make an appointment.
If you’re looking for a place to keep the Victorian romance going, you might consider the Mayflower Grace in idyllic Washington, CT. It’s a 30-room luxury hotel, with both Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond status, and offers both a spa and restaurant. Visit www.gracehotels.com/mayflower or call 860 868-9466 for hotel reservations.
