Block Island Old Harbor Walking Tour

7. Beach Access

Crescent Beach refers to the wide white sand beach you see here, but it goes by many names – Mansion Beach, Fred Benson Town Beach, Baby Beach and Surf Beach among them -- depending on where on the beach you are. Whatever you call it, Crescent Beach is pleasant both for walking and for swimming, with a nice view of town, the jetty, and ferries coming in and out. As you walk back towards town, you’ll pass through Surf Beach at the South end of Crescent Beach, named for The Surf Hotel which sits just above it. It’s the best place to snorkel on the island, with rock formations and a breakwater that make it an ideal spot to check out the abundant sea life, including small crabs and starfish, and to hunt for shells and sand dollars. The beach stays shallow for a long way out, making it great for kids.

Directions to next stop:

When you get to the head of the jetty/break wall, below the Surf Hotel, take the stairs on your right up to Water Street. You should now be standing directly across the street from the National Hotel.
